community newsUganda needs you... yes YOU!Thursday, 18 February 2010 If you haven't already read about and signed the petition against Uganda's new law set to punish homosexual intercourse with prison or even death, then there couldn't be a better time to do so. Obama has said he considers the bill "odious" and a petition is now gathering international strength - to which we're all invited to add our names. Even if the bill is passed it's important that strong opposition is voiced. Ugandan homophobic Pastor Martin Ssempa recently showed gay pornography to his congregation in an attempt to gain support for the new law but the BBC reports that President Yoweri Museveni was "coming under international pressure to scrap the proposals". Ugandan gay rights advocate Frank Mugisha: "This law will put is in serious danger. Please sign the petition and tell others to stand with us - if there's a huge global response our government will see that Uganda will be internationally isolated by the proposed law and strike it down." www.avaaz.org/en/uganda_rights_3/?vl Find out more about the battle for gay rights in Uganda at: Avaaz.org, the organisation behind the petition, is a global web movement that aims to close the gap between the world as it is and the world as people want it to be. The group now has over 3.5 million members around the world taking part in petitions on issues from climate change to supporting nonviolent protests in Burma. According to magazine The Economist Avaaz is "posed to deliver a deafening wake-up call to world leaders".
