Legendary scene DJ dies after 40 years behind the decks.

DJ Tullulah dies

Legendary is a word easy to use but hard to live up to. Dj Tallulah did. Full stop. And it’s with a heavy heart that clubland learnt this week of the death of the, and yes we’re going to use that word again, legendary DJ Tallulah.

The scene will no doubt be shocked and saddened at the news of such a loss - and tour dance floors will seem a lesser place without him on the decks.

A DJ for over 40 years Tallulah had done it all, played it all and did it well. Tallulah's CV is as varied and impressive as London’s queer history and he made his tunes and personality heard through the decades, at Earl's Court in the late Sixties, Bang in the Seventies, Scandals in the Eighties, Heaven in the Nineties and Crash and Shadow Lounge in the Noughties. Studio 54 felt his groove, we felt his groove, even history felt his groove. 2007 saw The House of Homosexual Culture make Tallulah their first entrant into its Homo Hall of Fame, as they recognised his importance to queer culture.

Commenting on the news, Paul Kemp of Aeon Events said, "It is with great and genuine sadness that we at Wild Fruit heard of the passing of one of clubland’s premier characters and much loved personalities Tallulah. To say that Tallulah will be much missed is a vast understatement. Tallulah will leave a big hole in the lives of many, many friends and his unique charm, with and sparkling personality will be utterly irreplaceable on the scene."

Dj Guy Williams said "Tallulah was a love, always smiling and keeping the faith. I remember first meeting him around 13 years ago at Princess Julia's place after/during a mad night out. We talked music for hours, as we did often after that. Tullulah you will be missed. May you disco dance with the angels. Dj Stevie B also paid tribute saying "Tallulah, Tallulah, where do I begin? I think back to Heaven, maybe ten years ago, and I remember seeing this fabulous character behind the DJ box playing his heart out and delivering some fantastic Disco music, played like no other DJ I’d heard before. I later discovered that Tallulah was a DJ legend that I could do nothing but watch in awe. From then on, we started chatting and became disco buddies. I was welcomed into whatever club or room he was playing in with open arms, that great big smile and a true cheek cheek disco kiss. I felt so honoured. My memories of such a gentle, charming, talented, dedicated, man will live on in disco music forever; like Gloria Gaynor sings “I never can say goodbye. God bless the King of Disco."



DJ Tallulah. 1948-2008. A legend who was a pleasure to love.
