Does your god hate fags?
Is there room to be both religious and gay?

Does your god hate fags?

Monday, 16 July 2007

Even Satan quotes the bible for his own means.

I'm confused. There do seem to be very mixed messages coming from the big religions about homosexuality.

On the one hand, you have certain religious groups making a date in their diary for various Pride marches and events to wave their banners that hail fire and brimstone, and seemingly water at the mouth when spouting forth about the more salacious aspects of our sins.

On the other, you have some religious groups and churches that want to welcome us all with open arms. Some of those that encourage a pinker congregation do so on the basis of non-practicing homosexuality (does that include non-thinking-about-it, in which case aren't we being asked to forsake our sexuality altogether?) and some gloss over rather ambiguous texts (to me anyway) that would point us to eternal damnation in hell.

Is there still a place for religion for us today - or should we just take our own moral stance; as Glinda says in The Wizard of Oz, "Are you a good witch or a bad witch?"

Religious groups seem to have been given carte blanche by the government to condemn homosexuality.

Recent guidance on equality legislation issued to 'faith schools' (ie schools with a religious ethos) allows them to continue to treat homosexuality as a disease that must be eradicated. The government's argument goes, presumably, that everyone should be free to express their religion.

But according to a new survey from Stonewall, gay pupils in these faith schools are more likely to be at the receiving end of homophobic bullying.

Is it not obvious that condemning homosexuality in the classroom will lead to bullying of gay kids? Does this sit comfortably with the parents that send their kids to religious schools ("I'm fine with it - my child can't possibly be gay!"), or indeed with the religions that insist that people of the same sex shouldn't touch each others bits. Is homosexuality really more abhorrent to them than gay kids committing suicide because they think there's something wrong with them?

We're evidently still very far from having achieved equal rights for LGBT people even in this 'tolerant' country of ours.

The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GLHA) has lots more info on this topic, as does Stonewall of course.
